1. The U.S. Postal Service introduced the worksharing concept of presort over twenty-two years ago and initially offered a one cent incentive for mailpieces meeting the qualification requirements. This program has grown significantly over the years and its effectiveness has been recognized by continuous incentive increases for prebarcoded/presorted mail. Members of this Association now presort over 17 billion pieces of First Class Mail annually, of which more than 15 billion are prebarcoded. 2. The National Association of Presort Mailers was founded in 1984 for the purpose of providing a channel of communications among members concerning regulations, policies, plans and actions, which impact the presort/prebarcoding industry and to:
We have established an excellent working relationship with the USPS management and staff, the Postal Rate Commission and the various oversight committees on Capitol Hill. The Association is represented on the Mailers Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) - a joint Industry and Postal Service organization. Our representatives to MTAC actively participate in established subcommittees and special ad hoc groups. NAPM is also active in the Mailers Council whose members represent over 75% of letter mail generated throughout the country. 3. Presort and prebarcoding have proven to be mutually beneficial to both the U.S. Postal Service and mailers. By working together with a cooperative spirit, the net postage savings have been and will continue to be significant. Automation has become the key to cost-effective mail processing and the private sector has invested substantially in presort/prebarcoding systems. Today, virtually all or our members have added automated equipment to their operations. 4. To succeed in fulfilling the Association's purpose and objectives, we need the support of all companies and individuals who have an interest in the future of our industry and in protecting their investment and cost savings in presort and prebarcoding. Accordingly, we solicit your participation as a member now so that we can continue to enhance the worksharing programs through a strong and effective association. 5. Please do not hesitate to contact the office of the Administrative Assistant, Sue Herdrich, (800) 500-NAPM (6276), or our Membership Chairman, Debbie Pfeiffer at (614) 272-7808 for more details about membership in what the Business Mailers Review has described as being, "one of the most influential segments of the mailing community serving mailers across the country."
